An Ode to Australia
Every year when Australia Day approaches, I get nostalgic (and slightly jealous of all my friends down under enjoying it). You see, this is a day where you get to embrace Aussie lifestyle at it’s finest. You meet up with some mates, drink (a lot) of beer, soak up some sunshine, and dance/have music discussions while the Triple J Hottest 100 countdown plays in the background.
I’ve documented lots of my experiences living down under, but today I’m highlighting my most memorable ones and why you need to experience them for yourself ;)
1. The Great Ocean Road
A trip to Australia isn’t complete without a cruise down the Great Ocean Road. Grab some mates and take in the epic views. Oh and look, here’s a video about it!
2. The Music Festivals
I had a chance to attend Big Day Out, Good Vibrations and the Sydney Festival and have to admit, these were some of my favourite weekends living down under. What could be better than a mix of topless men, music, beer, and dancing?
3. Beach Hunting
Since Australia is surrounded by water, it’s pretty easy to find a beach anywhere. The question is, finding a hidden gem worth revisiting again and again. I used to stand at the bus corner sometimes and hop on the first one that rocked up to see where it would take me. I ended up discovering some pretty amazing new beaches and love Australia for this exact reason. I also found the perfect spot in North Bondi to watch the sunset every evening. Had a lot of great ‘thinking’ moments there.
4. Shopping at the Local Markets
As a traveller, I was always looking for ways to save money down under since the cost of living is relatively high, so I always made sure to locate the local market whatever city I was living in. From the Victoria Market in Melbourne to the Salamanca Markets in Hobart, shopping local saves you money and gives you a taste of the culture and food (literally). I was able to make merely $20 buy me groceries for a week (and it lasted too!)
5. Picnics and Patios
Everywhere you go, you’re bound to see someone having a picnic with their friends and family. This was probably one thing that stood out to me the most, and one thing I’ve continued to do as often as possible whenever there is warm weather. It’s a great way to try new wine/beers/ciders while catching up with some mates and being outdoors.
If Australia isn’t on your list of places to visit in the next five years, I would definitely add it! I left this country not only with a bronzed body and happy smile, but a better understanding on how to maintain a work-life balance which Aussies have mastered. This country will always have a special place in my heart and I will most definitely be back again and again :)

Can you believe in all the times I’ve been to Australia (or near Australia) I have never spent Australia day in the country!? CRAZY!
I agree with all of your top 5 memories – except I didn’t really get to any music festivals, and I wish I had. Ah well… theres always next year, right?
I think that you and Alicia need to come to Oz and celebrate next year ;)
xox.
I like this idea A LOT! lol
Very glad to see Tassie got a mention (and a pic!).
Australia Day makes me nostalgic too – although not as much as AFL Grand Final Day!
It’s great to see a non-Australian appreciate my country so much. Happy Australia Day.
I love the pics that go along with this! I think I’d really enjoy a concert down there – so many good Aussie bands emerging!
